The project will focus on investigations to understand;
1) The Al anodization process.
a) Structure and growth of the protective oxide
b) Effect of natural barrier layer on the oxide.
c) Influence of intermetallic particles on anodizing process
2) The corrosion resistance of anodized Al.
a) Localized corrosion – microgalvanic coupling between particles and matrix.
b) Intergranular corrosion (IGC) - grain boundary and particle size effects.
c) Influence of alloying.
A combination of several experimental techniques are used for the investigations, i.e. X-ray Reflectivity (XRR), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT)
